What could Arthur Miller, one of the most prolific American writers, and the duo of Twenty One Pilots possibly have in common? Much more than it might appear at first glance. According to Tyler Joseph, one of the members of the band, the book All My Sons by Arthur Miller was actually the inspiration behind the band’s name, Twenty One Pilots. The book focuses on the moral struggles of a man who voluntarily caused the death of 21 pilots who fought during World War II. He had knowingly sent them faulty parts in order to preserve his own business.
This enigmatic and uncommon approach is what ultimately characterizes Twenty One Pilots as a band. Founded by two college friends, Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun have been able to create a style so unique that even their fans have a hard time placing it into a pre-defined music genre of its own. The music duo, who tries to stay away from socially constructed labels, prefers to refer to their own music as schizophrenic pop.
The band logo also leaves fans puzzled, as the linear symbols leave plenty of room to interpretation. According to Tyler Joseph, the logo symbolizes “Humans [who] are always struggling all the time when it comes to purpose, trying to figure out their purpose is, what purpose even is, what's the point, justifying your own existence. […] When someone asks me what the logo means to me, the logo means something to me because I made it mean something to me. That's the point. The point is that I created something that only I understand and whether or not I decide to disclose the meaning of it, that's the beginning of purpose for me.”
The lyrics of their songs mirror this intricate, philosophical approach to life. In fact, they write poetry, which they later add musicality to, thus culminating into a mesmerizing, attractive, psychedelic song that has fans coming back for more. As Tyler Joseph has pointed out, if the poetry is too long, he does not shorten it. Rather, he prefers to go ahead and rap it out so to keep the flow as well as the verse intact.
Since their first debut album, Twenty One Pilots (2009), they have been signed by Fueled by Ramen Production. Through the label, they have released two full-length studio albums, Vessel (2013) and Blurryface (2015). Ever since they got together in Cleveland, Ohio, as college boys, their fan base has been increasing steadily. Their new and fresh outlook on music has earned them several Award nominations, as well as two iHeartRadio Music Awards win in 2015 for Alternative Rock Artist of the Year as well as Alternative Rock Song of the Year with their incredibly successful single Stressed Out.
The year 2016 has started out in a very promising light for the dynamic duo. In fact, they have been nominated for four Billboard Music Awards which include Top Rock Artist, Top Duo/Group, Top Rock Song, and even Top Rock Album. This unstoppable duo has indeed made a mark in the music industry and in their fans’ hearts. After all, according to them, the main purpose of their music is so to “make people think”, as well as encourage them to find joy and happiness in their lives and in what matters the most to them.
